My Thoughts on “What If Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands”

This will contain spoilers. You’ve been warned.

This past month, I’ve been watching Marvel’s “What If” series. I didn’t really have any expectations of it as I’m not a consumer of the comics in any way. What I am is a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) junkie, so virtually anything they put out, I’m willing to watch.

I appreciated the Captain Carter episode and adored the T’Challa as Star Lord episode. Episode 3, “What If The World Lost It’s Mightiest Heroes” had an unexpectedly different, and much darker tone but episode 4, “What If Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands” floored me.

Full disclosure, by the time Doctor Strange entered the MCU, I was completely over the whole undeserving white male protagonist gets powers he doesn’t deserve then proves that he can use them for good trope that is most MCU movies. Prior to the pandemic, Doctor Strange was the only MCU film I chose not to see in theaters and when I finally saw it, I didn’t enjoy it. Needless to say, I was disappointed to see this episode would center him but as an MCU junkie, I watched it anyway.

I loved this episode.
